Hybridizing Old Downtown, Suwon City
Details
All globalized urban areas are going through global challenges; energy cost and scarcity, destruction of environment, global climate change and food security crises. How such cities resolve these issues when they meet the local challenges together? To answer this question, CheongJong Lee studied the current urban fabrics of the Old Downtown in Suwon City, South Korea, which is designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. This study investigates the experimental urban model by proposing sustainable and productive urban tactics; particularly, re-organizing land use programs while increasing the utilization of valuable resources such as the region s historical heritage and natural resources. This will be accomplished through two primary design strategies: 1) establishment of agriculturally productive landscapes and 2) integration of recreational infrastructures. This would be a highly valuable study not only for the landscape architect, but also the architect and the urban planner.
