The Vietnam War is in the hearts and minds of a whole generation of Americans. Politicians promise us "No other Vietnam" when they start a military involvement, researchers warn of "Another Vietnam" when their analyses show that a conventional war cannot be won. Yet this book will neither explain the war, nor the related American political and personal traumatization, it will show how Vietnam came, very literally, to the USA in the form of hundreds of thousands of refugees. After the defeat of Saigon in spring 1975, massive waves of Vietnamese sought refuge in the United States. In this book three distinct refugee waves are described and their special needs and difficulties in finding their feet with the Americans explained. But how did the U.S. Government act and react, which obstacles and problems had the Vietnamese to overcome and how do they fare nowadays? Finally which are appropriate tools and approaches to research immigration and integration processes? Answers to those and other questions can be found in this book.
