A midfielder, he began his career at hometown club Bristol Rovers in 1981, going on to play for Wimbledon, Brentford, Torquay United, a second spell back at Bristol Rovers, and Queens Park Rangers. He returned for a third time to Bristol Rovers, where he became player-manager before ending his playing career in 1999. He has since managed previous club QPR, Plymouth Argyle and Leicester City.
