Details

Tracing the tendencies of social changes through the ages, it is observed that among Khasi matrilineal society, there is a definite change over time due to many elements that exist in the society. The important factors that have brought the changes in the system are mainly the increasing rate of urbanisation, modernisation, and also the intermingling of different communities with the Khasi society, besides the impact of Christian missionaries. The changes that occurred over time have been examined as the pre-requisite to show the transformation of the matrilineal society which effects women position and ability to negotiate. To modify the health seeking behaviour among women, one has to look into her position and mostly the society where she lives and the prevailing cultural practices. Thus, it is essential to develop a programme, which is culturally accepted as well as convenient for women, so that the women can adopt it quite easily without violating their culture and customs.
