Details

Fisheries resources of the country play an important role in the economic development of a country and well being of its people. Since prehistoric times man has been deriving his food by means of fishing from aquatic resources. Excavations from Harappa, presently in the southern district of Sahiwal in Punjab show the marine fish remains in the shape of bones of catfish and queenfish. The local name is Sara or all of the latter. These species belong to the sea only. These could reach thousands of kilometer distance only after preservation, transportation and marketing systems. This shows that the people of South Asia were not merely involved in catching fish since millenniums but were also able to preserve and transport them to far-flung areas.
