Infectious complications in chronic hemodialysis patients

Introduction:Chronic hemodialysis patients have a particular susceptibility to nosocomial or community-acquired infection, which is the second leading cause of mortality in hemodialysis. The objective of our study was to describe the different types of infections reported in chronic hemodialysis patients.Methods:This is a retrospective study, carried out over a period of 3 years in a population of chronic hemodialysis patients hospitalized for an infectious complication in the department of nephrology, dialysis and renal transplantation of the CHU La Rabta.Results:A total of 84 patients were included, divided into 45 men (53.6%) and 39 women (46.4%). The mean age was 58.6± 13.4 years [26.8 - 87.7 years]. Bacterial infections were in first place with a prevalence of 80.8%. Bronchopneumonia, urogenital infections, and vascular access infection were the most frequent, noted in 27.2%, 25.6%, and 12.8% of cases respectively. Viral infections were noted in 17 cases (13.6%). Five patients (4%) had a fungal infection. Two patients (1.6%) had a parasitic infection. Death was noted in 8.3% of patients.
