Usually when darkness descends at hill region, people rush to wrap up their daily chores.They had to use kerosene lamps. Kerosene lamp's fume seems to had drained the excitement from their lives. Generally it was seen that children eyes would water and were irritated and painful because of the kerosene lamp, if they study any longer than an hour, they were also afraid of the dark, so they slept in the light of the lamp from 9 pm-6 am. Poor lighting system was also cause of accidents, injuries and problems. But when solar lighting gadgets were introduced things would changed. It was observed that during investigation those solar lighting gadgets had significant impact on the people of mountain areas. The scholars from various disciplines have contributed towards this giant issue. A book of such a dimension of a great use to not only hill families of Uttarakhand but also to the extension worker, Govt. and Non Govt. organizations, manufacturers and retailers who are concern about the solar energy and solar lighting gadgets.

Dr. Janki Joshi (born 13 April 1985)is presently working in SAPKM Kiccha as Assistant Professor.She obtained her B.Sc. and Ph. D degree from GBPUA&T, Pantnagar and M.Sc. from PAU, Ludhiana. She has been recipient of ICAR fellowship and merit during her M. Sc. and Ph. D. degree. She has cleared NET conducted by UGC.
