Integrating Handloom-Weavers into Bangladeshi RMG Production Chain
Details
The Handloom industry, the largest cottage-based informal industry, of Bangladesh employs more than 1.5 million people and meets more than 40% clothing demands of the country. Today, Handloom technology of Bangladesh is same as it was few decades ago. This paper-analyzed socio-economic condition of weavers, their technologies, their produced product potential, as well as SWOT of the Industry, and accordingly proposed Methods, Policies and Strategies to revive and integrate weavers. Through Handloom Clusters Development Program, integration of Handloom weavers is obvious, technologies dissemination through Diffusion and Adoption methods is important, and Mobile Classroom-the School on Wheels' method is crucial to reach and teach the target weavers in the village areas. Effective coordination among backward linkage, strategic supports, and forward linkage is strongly recommended to get the maximum outcomes from cluster development. National Institute of Textile Testing Research and Design (NITTRAD) is considered as the prime supportive institution for this development program.
