Interceptive Orthodontics

Interceptive orthodontics (IO) refers to a wide array of interventions carried out in the mixed dentition of children that aim to prevent or reduce severity of malocclusion in the permanent dentition. The pediatric dental practitioner plays a crucial role in the identification and diagnosis of orthodontic problems presenting early. If intercepted and correctly managed during the mixed dentition period, many malocclusions may be eliminated or reduced in severity, saving the patient from complex orthodontic treatment at a later stage.
