Krippendorff develops works that are shaped by his backgrounda dual German-American citizen, who grew up in Romeand wrestle with subjects such as belonging, cultural assimilation, and states of being in-between and different.

The publication Interpretations focuses on Krippendorff's five most recent films and works he produced in connection with them. At the center of the monograph stands the trilogy Lament, which was inspired by music and created in close collaboration with the Palestinian actor Hiam Abbass. In addition to illustrations related to the works, the book contains an interview with Krippendorff by Kathrin Becker and essays on his art by David Elliott, Mark Gisbourne, Matthias Reichelt, Andrea Scrima, and Chiara Valci Mazzara.
