Intonation of Woodwind Instruments

The author has played principal flute for more than twenty years in three professional orchestras and since 1997, he has been conducting professionally. During this time discrepancies of intonation were noticed in all orchestras, mainly in the woodwind sections. The author has gathered in one book all the necessary information regarding the intonation of woodwind instruments. After describing each instrument s history and pitch particularities, practical methods and advice to improve the intonation are offered. This book should help to bring clarity on the phenomenon of woodwind instruments intonation, and should be useful to professionals in the art of music - conductors, producers, sound engineers, orchestral and chamber music players or anyone else who may be interested in ensemble playing.

PhD. Esteemed conductor, flute player and teacher, he played flute professionally for twenty years with the "G. Enescu" Philharmonic Orchestra in Bucharest, Romania and with the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra and the Cape Philharmonic. At present he is Associate Professor at the Stellenbosch University, South Africa and conducts professionally.
