One of the most important events in a woman's life is the course of child bearing. The goal of obstetrics is a pregnancy that culminates in a healthy infant and a minimally traumatized mother. The precise mechanism of initiation of labor in human beings is still obscure and imperfectly understood. The multitude of biological substances which interact in the control of human birth process seem to increase almost daily, the important substances being: progesterone, calcium, oxytocin and prostaglandins (especially prostaglandin E2 and prostaglandin F2 )
