Irregular emigration

This book takes a critical look at the societal phenomenon of irregular emigration, commonly known as "Barca or barsaq". The author diagnoses a "deep-seated evil" and explains the real reasons behind it. Drawing on his 17 years of experience, the author explains how the phenomenon of irregular emigration has evolved over time and space, with all its consequences for Senegalese society. More than a question of mobility, migration, according to the author, involves geopolitical issues. Finally, the author, without any pretension whatsoever, proposes possible solutions to curb this human tragedy.

El Hadji Daouda Luc Gbaya is a journalist and graduate of the Institut Supérieur des Sciences de l'Information et de la Communication (ISSIC). He worked for Le Quotidien (2006-2011), then for the newspaper Enquête (2011-2014). Winner of the Best Reportage Award (2009) from the PANOS Institute, Daouda is now a consultant on migration issues.
