This paper examines the relationship between the 'new' medium of the Internet and the established 'old' media of television and newspapers. The topic of complementarity or substitution of media has become particularly relevant for academic discourse with the growing use of the Internet. Based on three modern theoretical research approaches, this essay analyses and compares the latest findings on media competition from different countries and proposes ideas for further research.
