Such comments are heard from the huge stadiums of superclubs like Manchester United and Chelsea, through the lower leagues with less well known or glamourous clubs such as Mansfield Town down to Sunday league matches. Watching football is an experience thousands of people engage in every week. This study examines the impact that the experience had on the mental health of supporters of an English league football club.

Dr Alan Pringle is a lecturer in mental health nursing at the University of Nottingham. A lifetime of watching football and following Scotland and a season ticket at Mansfield Town led him to question whether watching football was good for the mental health of supporters.
