Islam and the Enskinment of Ya Na in Dagbon
Details
In the Dagbon Traditional area Nam (Chieftaincy) and Islam have interacted immensely. These in some cases seriously affected certain social issues including Nam (Chieftaincy), funerals, outdooring's and so on. Before the coming of Islam to Dagbon, the Nam was already an organized institution with with the Ya- Na at the top of all affairs in the political, religious, economic and social traditions of the area. The traditional people of Dagbon accepted Islam because it was in a way similar to their traditional practices and also enhanced the enskinment of the Ya-Na and other traditional office holders. The study tries to find out how these interactions came about on the enskinment of the Ya-Na in Dagbon.
