According to a poll by the Russian Public Opinion Research Center, 6% of respondents considered themselves Muslim. Muslim communities are concentrated among minority nationalities residing between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea: Adyghe, Balkars, Ch echens, Circassians, Ingush, Kabardin, Karachay, and numerous Dagestani peoples. Also, in the middle of the Volga Basin reside populations of Tatars and Bashkirs, the majority of whom are Muslims. There is also a sizable number of Russian converts to Islam, some of whom have participated in the Chechen conflict against Russian troops.
