Islamophobia: Roots, Consequences and Solutions

The British Muslim population is younger, growing in numbers and is characterized by diversity. Over the past 25 years, it has been the subject of much discussion, speculation and controversy. For some, the Muslim population is a cause for celebration: a flourishing symbol of Britain's commitment to the non-violent coexistence of human beings and values from around the world. For others, the Muslim population is a source of tension, a tension expressed by both Muslims and non-Muslims. These issues emanate from a wide range of political and ideological positions. Some annoying or disturbing voices vigorously defend the British Muslim population; others attack it with vitriol. Some defend the right of British Muslims to contribute to a diverse and pluralistic society, but fear that this contribution will be undermined by the sectarianism, prejudice and hostility inherent in some sections of British society.
