Ism lism is a branch of the Islamic faith. It is the second largest part of the Sh ah community, after the mainstream Twelvers (Ithn ashariyya). The Ism l get their name from their acceptance of Ism l ibn Jafar as the divinely appointed spiritual successor (Im m) to Jafar a - diq, wherein they differ from the Twelvers, who accept M sà al-K im, younger brother of Ism l, as the true Im m. Tracing its earliest theology to the lifetime of Mu ammad, Ism lism rose at one point to become the largest branch of Sh ism, climaxing as a political power with the Fatimid Empire in the tenth through twelfth centuries. In common with other Muslims, Ismailis believe in the oneness of God, as well as the closing of divine revelation with Mu ammad, whom they see as the final prophet and messenger of God to all humanity. The Ism l and the Twelvers both accept the same initial A'immah from the descendants of Mu ammad through his daughter F imah az-Zahra and therefore share much of their early history.
