It was written during the sessions recording The Beatles' White Album, but was rejected for that album. It was released as the B-side of "My Sweet Lord" in the United States on November 23, 1970, and both it and "My Sweet Lord" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It has been covered by numerous artists, including Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Pedro Aznar, Jay Bennett, the Cowboy Junkies, Peter Drake, 18th Dye, Galaxie 500, Nina Simone, Television Personalities, Nicky Thomas and The Three Degrees. Harrison included two versions of the song on All Things Must Pass. Version One is longer, at 7:10, while Version Two, though at a slower tempo, takes 4:47. It has a folksy melody that is similar to another song on the album, "Ballad of Sir Frank Crisp (Let It Roll)", and resembles several of Bob Dylan's ballads from the period
