Upper gastrointestinal bleeding, defined as bleeding originating from lesions proximal to Treitz's ligament, which separates the duodenum from the jejunum, is a clinical condition with a mortality rate of around 6 to 10%. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy is the best method available for proper diagnosis and treatment. Studies of this nature aim to guide healthcare professionals who deal with these patients on a daily basis, whose clinical presentation can vary from simple cases to true medical catastrophes.
