James Lawrence Smith was the co-owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers of the National League from 1944 until his death in 1950. In 1944, he purchased his 25% share of the club from James Mulvey and Dearie Mulvey (along with Walter O'Malley and Branch Rickey). His wife inherited his 25% share of the Dodgers, acting as a minority owner under Walter O'Malley. She sold her share to O'Malley and the Mulveys in 1958. Major League Baseball (MLB) is the highest level of professional baseball in the United States and Canada, consisting of teams that play in the National League and the American League. The two leagues merged in 2000 into a single MLB organization led by the Commissioner of Baseball after 100 years as separate legal entities.
