Details

This book aims to research some of the most characteristic periods / milestones from the mid-16th century to the mid-20th century which incorporate the interactive relationship between Japanese culture and the West. More specifically, in a set of seven essays, with a different subject at a time, the evolution of the applied and decorative arts of these two so different cultural poles is explored through the historical, social and cultural context of the relevant period. From the particularly enchanting historic area of the Nanban art period in Japan (1543-1615) to the spread of the Mingei ideology to the post war United States mass design culture, especially ceramics, the readers will have the chance explore an area rich in historical information that will broaden their spiritual horizons in terms of the complex and ambivalent field of the applied arts of two completely different cultures.
