Aso was an Unry class aircraft carrier, a class of fleet carriers meant to fill up the carrier losses at the Battle of Midway and the Leyte Campaign. As with sister ship Katsuragi, a lack of suitable large turbines required that Aso be fitted with destroyer turbines, resulting in one knot knots less speed than other Unryu class carriers. Work on Aso stopped in January, 1945 due to lack of materials, following Japanese losses in the Pacific War. She was incomplete at the end of the war and later sunk as a target, only to be refloated and scrapped shortly thereafter in 1947.
