The author purposely rejects a fully-developed narrative style as well as a more methodical and comprehensive philosophical approach to the presentation of his ideas. But Fuster is not alone in this way of approaching the essay and the philosophical genre. In fact, he belongs to a long list of philosophers who have prioritized this form and style in their writings, from the classical Greek and Roman periods to the writings of Montaigne, one of his main sources, and the encyclopedists. Joan Fuster i Ortells is a major writer in the Valencian language who contributed to reinvigorate nationalism in Valencia during the Spanish transition to democracy. He coined the term "Països Catalans" to refer to the Catalan-speaking territories. He is also a renowned essayist and storyteller known for his vast thematic breadth and incisiveness.

Antonio Cortijo-Rodgers works at the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley where he specializes in formal logic. He is a member of the Center for Catalan Studies (University of California, Santa Barbara)
