John Vertin (b. at Dobli e, Diocese of Laibach (Carniolia), Austrian Empire (now in rnomelj, Slovenia), 17 July 1844; d. at Marquette, Michigan, 26 February 1899) was a Slovene-American Catholic priest who became the third Bishop of Marquette, U.S.A. He was responsible for the reconstruction in 1880 of St. Peter Cathedral, Marquette. He received his classical education at Novo Mesto, and came to America at the age of nineteen. His parents presented him to Bishop Baraga, who, upon adopting him into the diocese, sent him to St. Francis, Wisconsin, where he completed his theological training.
