It is always an enormous challenge to prevent schools from being enclosed behind fences, and define a clear edge for private-public territories due to the complicated relationship between a school & its neighbors, each side experience a degree of nuisance and a sense of irritation from the other, such as acts of vandalism (however trivial), the use of parking spaces, the noise and crush associated with the beginning and end of the school day, in a sense that each side seeks separation, individualization& solidarity leading to exclusion and detachment. We should be concerned that children cannot be properly integrated into society and can only play freely in a special preserve behind a high fence, my concern is not only to design a building with playgrounds, but to redesign the environment as a whole, to properly engage the society to develop mutual understanding and appreciation, where the society accepts and values its own children, by looking out for devices that can promote harmony between the school and the neighborhood. The attempt suggests that the school could be a focal meeting point for the neighborhood, fostering social cohesion.
