Lake Forest is a city located in Lake County, Illinois, United States, and is one of the most affluent communities in the United States, and ranked within the top three communities of the Central United States along with Winnetka, Illinois. The population reached 21,300 according to data collected by CNN Money in 2008. The city is south of Waukegan, Illinois, on the shore of Lake Michigan, and is a part of the Chicago metropolitan area and the affluent North Shore. Lake Forest was founded around its college and laid out as a town in 1857 as a stop for travelers making their way south to Chicago. The Lake Forest City Hall, designed by Frost and Granger, Architects, was completed in 1898 and housed the fire department, Lake Forest Library, and city offices.The headquarters of Tenneco, Brunswick, and Hospira (all Fortune 500 companies) are in Lake Forest; Also Coyote Logistics has it's headquarters in downtown Lake Forest. W.W. Grainger, Inc. and BFG Technologies are located in unincorporated Lake County, near Lake Forest.
