Learning Basic Genetics with Interactive Computer Programs
Details
Designed to help teach genetics with greater ease and less anxiety, this book includes a comprehensive, interactive learning program developed at at the University of Chicago and Purdue University, that focuses on chromosome simulation and model building.
Traditionally, genetics laboratory exercises at the university level focus on mono- and dihybrid crosses and phenotypic analysisexercises under traditional time, materials, and process constraints. Lately, molecular techniques such as gene cloning, polymerase chain reactions (PCR), and bioinformatics are being included in many teaching laboratorieswhere affordable. Human chromosome analysis, when present at all, has often been restricted to simple identification of chromosomes by number, through the usual cut-and-paste method. Although several online karyotyping (chromosome identification) programs have become available, they are not meaningful for studying the dynamics of the chromosome system, nor do they help students understand genetics as a discipline.
The software that accompanies this book has been shown to be an ideal tool for learning about genetics, which requires a combination of understanding, conceptualization, and practical experience.

Klappentext
Learning Basic Genetics with Interactive Computer Programs is a comprehensive and interactive learning program that focuses on chromosome simulation and model building. It is intended to assist students in learning more about genetics with ease. The 11 modules of this program form an integrated system for learning the basic concepts of genetics. The program innovation lies in its unique content design that incorporates cognitive feedback and experiential learning through the novel use of interactive applications. Each of the modules is designed to enhance learning by simultaneously employing eyes-on, minds-on, and hands-on activities. Topics are motivated by questions, information is presented in simple terms, and concepts are clarified by interactive prompts. Used as a supplement to traditional lectures and textbook assignments, the program not only serves as a foundation upon which to build more complex and detailed topics, but as a tutor to clarify and guide when there is confusion. The software that accompanies this book has been shown to be an ideal tool for learning about genetics, which requires a combination of understanding, conceptualization, and practical experience.
