Il bias retrospettivo è ben noto come l'impressione di aver già conosciuto in anticipo l'esito di un evento, dopo aver ricevuto le informazioni effettive sul suo esito (Fischhoff, 1975). Sono state condotte numerose ricerche sul bias retrospettivo, con alcuni approcci che si sono concentrati, ad esempio, su variabili di differenza individuale come la competenza. Lo scopo del presente studio era quello di dimostrare che la competenza, costituita dalla conoscenza e dall'auto-presentazione, ha un impatto congiunto sul bias retrospettivo. In particolare, ci si aspettava che la conoscenza riducesse il bias e che l'auto-presentazione lo aumentasse.
