Local Mediation of Global Forces in Transformation of the Urban Fringe

Looking through the prism of the Information Technology clusters, in three globalising cities of India, this book explores how variations in sub-national and local political cultures impact urban development patterns by mediating forces emerging out of global economic demand and a uniform national regulatory regime. The research underscores the importance of the local institutional dynamics, in steering developmental trajectories at the urban scale. The research contributes to urban governance literature, by showing how an analytical framework, designed in the context of the Global North, requires recalibration to expand its applicability to the globalising cities in the emerging economies.

Dr Chatterji is Professor and Coordinator of the Urban Design and Development Program at Manipal University, India. He has written extensively on contemporary urban transformations in India. He studied Urban Design at Kent State University, USA and holds a PhD in Urban Planning and Governance from The University of Queensland, Australia.
