The University of Louisville Cardinals football team is a member of the Big East Conference. The football program enjoyed its greatest national prominence over the last decade under the guidance of coaches John L. Smith and Bobby Petrino. The Cards lit up scoreboards and made nine straight bowl game appearances from 1998 2006 and earned national rankings as high as sixth in 2004 and 2006. Louisville won 41 games in Petrino's four years as head coach (2003 2006).UofL went 12-1 in 2006, winning the Big East championship and the Orange Bowl, which was the school's first Bowl Championship Series bowl game. The Cardinals might have appeared in the BCS National Championship Game if they hadn't lost on a field goal in the final seconds at Rutgers.
