Magnitude and Nature of HIV/AIDS Coverage in the Ethiopian Press

In all programs in the fight against the HIV/AIDS pandemic, there is a general consensus that information and education remain the backbone. To disseminate information, the media can play a significant role. However, various commentators have claimed that the media have been an underutilized force in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Moreover, studies of media coverage of HIV/AIDS conducted in various parts of the world have shown that scant coverage and distorted portrayal are almost the rule of the day. Generally speaking, however, whether the media are using their roles in the prevention of HIV/AIDS effectively remains a subject of scholarly debate. In Ethiopia, imperial information about media coverage of HIV/AIDS is sparse. This book, therefore, provides detailed analyzes of the magnitude and nature of HIV/AIDS coverage in Ethiopian newspapers. Since the analysis was made using different theories and other researches as a backdrop, the book provides important implications not only about the coverage of HIV/AIDS but also about theoretical underpinnings. The book will be useful for students, journalists, researchers and professionals in the field of media and communications.
