Details

The prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) is steadily increasing everywhere, most markedly in the world's low and middle-income countries. DM is a metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action or both. DM is recognized as an important cause of premature death and disability; it is one of four priority non-communicable diseases targeted by world leaders. Globally, the World Health Organization estimates that, 422 million adults were living with DM in 2014, and projects that DM will be the seventh leading cause of death in 2030. Most of DM deaths (More than 80%) occur in low and middle-income countries. When DM is uncontrolled, it has dire consequences for health and well-being. In addition, DM and its complications impact harshly on the finances of individuals and their families and to health systems and national economies through direct medical costs and loss of work and wages.
