Making Bioethics Global
Details
How do you chart through the bioethical intricacies in indigenous medicine? In medical circles there is increasing concern about the resurgence of indigenous/traditional medicine (TM) which seems to be different from modern western medicine. This has caused a buzz about the bioethical implications of this surge. Numerous articles and books are a result of this discussion, however few have concerned themselves with extending this debate to research in indigenous medicine in Africa and the global south yet huge populations and pharmaceutical corporations depend on this type of medicine. This book is premised on the assumption that just like in modern western medicine, beneath the challenges in indigenous medicine lie perennial philosophical questions of ethics. This book is a result of investigation into these challenges in order to illuminate us on how they are experienced in the communities that use indigenous medicine. It examines them from both a practical and a bioethical / philosophical perspective. If you are to understand the intricacies that are involved in using TM in the global south, you have to read this book.
