Managed Pressure Drilling

In drilling the oil and gas wells the most important factor is cost, especially in offshore drillings that the costs are much higher than the onshore drilling. Drilling cost is directly related to the drilling problems such that if we can prevent the problems or solve them the costs maybe reduced significantly. The reason for the most of the drilling problems is the bad pressure profile in the well. MPD is the techniques and tools that let the driller to accurately control the pressure profile in the well and reduce the most of the drilling problems significantly. MPD is more important for middle east oil reservoirs because most of the big reservoirs are depleted and some of them are highly fractured that drilling in those is more problematic. Furthermore drilling most of the reservoirs is uneconomically with conventional drilling that it is mostly because of problems that occur. MPD can drill much of these reservoirs by pressure profile controlling techniques. In this book it has been tried to show a brief history of MPD, its techniques and its applications. Also MPD candidate selection is expressed briefly and reconciling the reservoirs that MPD is used in them.

Mahdi Kalantari Meybodi received his B.Sc.(2008-2012) and M.Sc.(2012-2014) degrees in Petroleum Engineering from Petroleum University of Technology(PUT) in IRAN. He is the author and reviewer of several research papers in ISI journals. Also he has been the member of SPE from 2008.
