Details

This study was carried out in the Department of Neurosurgery, Institute of Neurology, Government General Hospital (GGH), Chennai, India. It serves as a referral hospital for individuals with severe head injury patients. Those individuals with head injury admitted to the Head injury ward were included in the study. Information collected from patients suffering from Head injury was subjected to various statistical analyses. Valuable information regarding symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and behavioural aspects of the patient were listed and the relationships between them were established. A structured proforma was designed to incorporate all the clinical variables which were found to be risk factors for head injury, post injury complications and risk for death after head injury. The cumulative effect of the immediate and indirect effects of head injury is usually devastating, not just for the victim, but also for his or her family. Accident at the productive age is a total loss to the family, society and nation at large and it leads to the loss of active life and manpower. Fast and aggressive treatment is therefore essential for increasing the chances of a good outcome.
