Managing Universities in Nigeria
Details
Several problematic issues riddle the committee system in Nigerian universities.Inter alia, they involve high cost in terms of time, money, materials and human resources, and it is questionable whether their output justifies the high cost expended on them. Aside, there is the problem of minority tyranny in which a small group or a strong leader imposes his will on the committee. It is against this background that this study sets out to appraise the effectiveness of the committee system. The outcome of this work shows that the committee system in Nigerian universities is a valuable management tool which facilitates the resolution of issues that bother on injustice/crass politics, free the university management for greater administrative responsibilities, and renders unique and specialized services. This study should be especially useful to administrators of higher institutions such as those in universities, polytechnics and colleges as well as the academic community in general.
