Maritime Security in Southeast Asia
Details
A Merchant Seaman by training, Douglas Tastad used his Fulbright Fellowship to study and research the maritime logistics system and trade flows of Southeast Asia from one of the world's most important shipping hubs in Singapore. His studies of this topic led him to research and write about the maritime security climate of the South China Sea. He wrote Maritime Security in Southeast Asia for his M.Sc. Thesis at Nanyang Technological University's Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies. This work explores the threat posed by China's economic, diplomatic and especially military encroachment on the region. It documents the very real possibility that China may increase its use force to implement its vision of ownership on the seas, archipelagos and resources stretching between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific. His writing is a warning to academics and policy makers alike to take the threat posed by China s moves in the region seriously.
