MAX REGER'S TELEMANN VARIATIONS, OP.134
Details
Max Reger's music is not widely known and performed. His music is often thought of as dense, highlychromatic, and hard to digest. The TelemannVariations offer a different view of this highlyprolific composer, who was regarded as the mostimportant composer next to Richard Strauss in earlytwentieth-century Germany. The theme, a minuet inbinary form, is taken from Telemann's Tafelmusik inB-flat Major. The variations exhibit a transparenttexture, regular phrases, and formal balance. Thereis a fair amount of literature about the life andmusic of Reger. However, the Telemann Variationsthemselves have not been the subject of manyscholarly writings. This document examines Reger'sperformance style at the piano based on newspaperreviews, witness reports, and letters describing hispianism. It also provides a general introduction tothe Telemann Variations, a musical analysis of eachvariation, and a new edition. The appendicesinclude a list of Reger's personal piano performancerepertoire, piano compositions, and piano rollrecordings.
