Maxillofacial prosthetics is a specialized dental field focused on rehabilitating patients with facial defects from congenital conditions,traum or tumor removal.They enhance both aesthetics& function, evolving significantly over time with advancements in technology and materials.Historically, the practice dates back to ancient civilizations like Egyptians, who used materials like wood and linen for artificial noses. By 19th century, more systematic approaches emerged, like using rubber&wax, but they had limited durability.The 20th century introduced synthetic materials like PMMA & silicone elastomers, which improved the flexibility&lifelike appearance of prosthesis.Recent advances include modern silicone elastomers with enhanced color stability,3D printing technology for precise customization, composite materials for improved strength, & digital workflow to streamline design&fabrication. Emerging biomaterials&smart materials that respond to environmental stimuli also show promise. Retention of maxillofacial prosthetics is crucial for patient satisfaction. Techniques include using biocompatible adhesives, magnets, custom fitting, effective soft tissue management.
