Measuring Quality of Life in Cities

There has been widespread interest in recent years in the field of quality of life (QOL) measurement research. This interest comes from the success QOL measurement achieved in understanding communities' needs, tracking changes in different aspects of life and assessing types of development most desired for the future among citizens. QOL is multi-faceted concept that has a multitude of meanings to various people. This research highlights the importance of measuring QOL in developing countries represented by the example of Jordan. It aims at examining the opportunity and applicability of carrying up QOL measurement studies in Amman as a major case of Jordan, and outlines different scopes,visions and approaches used to study and measure QOL. Doing so, it affords a general guide for measuring QOL, providing comprehensive understanding of QOL, its levels as well as, major aspects and approaches of measurement. Such a guide is believed to be useful not only for the specific case of this study, but for any one interested in carrying up a study in the field of QOL.

Yamen Nafeth Al-Betawi holds BSc in Architecture and MSc in Urban Planning and Studies from Jordan University of Science and Technology, Irbid, Jordan. He is currently a doctoral student at the School of City and Regional Planning, Cardiff University, UK. This book is based on his research for the masters degree.
