Mediated testimony: Heterogeneity, Hybridity, and Power Relations

Can mediated testimony convey the appeal of the first confession with the same intensity? To what extent does it allow the voice of the "other," the long-silenced word, to resonate? Is there a balance between the ideological tensions that clash in this plural discourse and insist on revealing themselves? Is the mediator of testimony merely an organizer of accounts? The study of the work Me llamo Rigoberta Menchú y así me nació la conciencia as testimonial narrative presents great complexity due to various factors, especially with regard to the problems of discursive mediation and the representation of indigenous otherness. In addition to the conflicts involved in the process of translating oral accounts into written form, there are many other disturbing questions that challenge thinking and invite scrutiny of the theme and cases. With a solid theoretical foundation that aims to define and understand the testimonial genre, this book seeks to contribute to literary and cultural studies in general and, in particular, to foster debates around texts constructed from the perspective of minorities, which is indispensable for the knowledge of an "other" history, a singular, complete, unmutilated history.
