Medical students and the pandemic: the case of COVID-19 in Mali
Details
COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, is a global pandemic. Health students play a key role in awareness and vaccination campaigns. However, few studies have focused on their knowledge, attitudes and practices in relation to COVID-19. This study, conducted among students at the Faculty of Medicine and Odontostomatology (FMOS) in Bamako between June and August 2023, aimed to assess these aspects. A mixed quantitative and qualitative method was used. Statistical analysis used SPSS (version 26.0) and thematic analysis for qualitative data. Knowledge and practice scores were calculated and categorized (good/bad). Logistic regression identified factors associated with knowledge and practice levels. The mean knowledge score was 7.74/10, with 72.1% of participants having poor knowledge. Associated factors included age, study class and belief in COVID-19. Concerning practices, the mean practice score was 3.64/5, with 69.6% having good practices. Gaps in knowledge had a negative impact on practices.
