Memory and Civilization
Details
This paper aims to analyze the forms of language in the first newspaper in the northern region of Minas Gerais, the Correio do Norte, at the end of the 19th century. To do this, I identified the characterizations made about the region, with regard to the people, their social practices and the use of the land. In this way, I noticed a qualification regarding the nature of the region, but a subordination of the people. I understand that in the period studied there was an ideology of "civility" that dominated various parts of society, and that education and especially communication used these issues to justify the imposition of new ways of life to replace the tradition of the time. I used the press as a source and object, since journalistic languages interested me in thinking about these issues. The research therefore focused on the editions of the newspaper from that period, identifying the way the newspaper was made, the people who were in charge of it and its relationship with the politics of the time.
