High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Mesopropithecus is a small- to medium-sized, extinct genus of lemur, or strepsirrhine primate, from Madagascar that includes three species, M. dolichobrachion, M. globiceps, and M. pithecoides. Together with Palaeopropithecus, Archaeoindris, and Babakotia, the four genera compose the family Palaeopropithecidae, or more commonly known as the sloth lemurs. Once thought to be a type of indriid due to the similarities of its skull with living sifakas, a recently discovered postcranial skeleton shows they had longer forelimbs than hind limbs a distinctive trait shared by sloth lemurs and not indriids. However, having the shortest forelimbs of all the sloth lemurs, it is thought that they were more quadrupedal and did not use suspension as much as the other sloth lemurs. Mesopropithecus were not only the smallest of the sloth lemurs, but was one of the smallest of the extinct subfossil lemurs. However, they were still slightly larger than the largest of the living lemurs. Although rare within their original range, they were widely distributed across the island.
