MGNREGA; An Indian Model for Women Empowerment

National Rural Employment Guarantee Act gives legal guarantee of at least 100 days of wage employment to rural household. It upholds people's right to seek work in a legal frame work. This new programme approached development of the nation through the economic and social empowerment of the rural people especially the rural women. This study is with some empirical findings regarding the nature of economic activities under MGNERGA programme in Kerala and also the socio-economic impact of MGNREGA programmes especially on the rural women population. Implementation of MGNREGA has contributed to high levels of women empowerment. It has made a successful inroads to rural women empowerment in Kerala. The study examines the awareness and asserting of women's identity in terms of economic status and participation in social spheres. It throws light on some important aspects of women empowerment.
