Modeling and Analysis of Laser Metal Forming Processes

This book deals with the modeling and analysis of laser thermal sheet metal forming processes using finite element and soft computing methods. Development of predictive models based on finite element and soft computing methods are discussed for estimating deformations and temperature distributions in laser metal forming processes using both continuous and pulsed modes of laser irradiations. Effects of different process parameters on deformation behaviors in both continuous and pulsed laser forming are studied through statistcal regression analysis. Inverse analysis for fabricating a class of 2D shapes and axisymmetric 3D shapes using laser forming are also reported. Experimental validation of the developed models for different laser metal forming processes are also presented. Optimization of the different laser metal forming processes for determining the optimum processing conditions are described.Future scopes for further investigatons on laser forming are mentioned at the end.

Dr. Kuntal Maji is working as an Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering Department of NIT Patna. He received his Ph.D. from IIT Kharagpur. He has published several papers in peer reviewed international journals. His research interests include nontraditional manufacturing, metal forming,applications of FEA and soft computing in manufacturing.
