Modern American musical term
Details
Modern American Music Terms (CAMT) occupy a special place in the terminological system of the English language: they are characterized by their unusual origin, unusual external form, and ambiguous stylistic status. With the help of Internet experiment with professional musicians we formulate the relevant criteria of terminology, which allow separating CAMT from professionalisms and jargonisms. The systematic organization of modern musical terms according to the semantic and cognitive principle is shown in accordance with the type of the reflected knowledge. The study has revealed the specificity and typology of the modern musical discourse. The study has revealed the peculiarities of the SAMT functioning depending on the type of musical discourse, as well as the factors contributing to the determinology of musical terms outside of musical discourse. The basic ways of development and the role of etymology in the development of the meaning of determinological SAMT have been revealed. The results of the work contribute to the development of terminology and lexicography, and deepen the understanding of terminological criteria and functional and pragmatic features of SAMTs.
