Rapid evolution of wireless communication standards demands frequent changes and updates in the communication system hardware. Today's global research community is looking for a generic receiver architecture which can accommodate these changes without the need of replacing the existing hardware systems. Software defined radio is a promising solution but can we really make a real communication system which can accommodate all the present and future frequency bands and protocols? What are the constraints on the present receiver architectures and what solution do we have to implement the software defined radio concept in a real hardware system? Six-Port based receiver system is an alternative receiver architecture which is a direct conversion receiver architecture. Can it solve the issues of the present receiver architectures and meet the requirements of the software defined radio concept?
